In 2004 we acquired Lupita Island, a deserted island 5 kms off the mainland. It was thick bush and foliage with beautiful trees and not much more so we had a blank slate to work with. Construction began in 2004 and was completed in 2008. Wherever possible, we have utilised locally-sourced thatching, wood products and African antiques. We brought in experienced tradesmen from the cities and worked closely with local people around the islands teaching them new trades of which today they are now the ones we call on to help with our maintenance. We consider the lodge as rustic luxury. Straight lines and perfect symmetry are not part of the vocabulary here.
Lupita Island is the ultimate private island retreat, offering luxurious accommodations set amidst a pristine natural habitat. Located on Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, the longest, second oldest and second deepest lake in the world, this 110-acre private island resort has eleven lavishly decorated, thatched-roof living spaces including a family cottage all strategically positioned to offer both privacy and breathtaking, uninterrupted views of Africa’s second largest lake.
Lupita Island offers welcome luxury after your days in the bush. A two hour fifty minute flight southwest from the Serengeti, it is the ideal venue for retreats or milestone celebrations such as anniversaries, honeymoons, birthdays, and graduations. Private island rental is also available (link to exclusive use).
